Theater history buffs: Which play owes it's success to a newspaper strike?

I remember my teacher telling the story of a play on Broadway (probably in the 50's) that the critics panned, yet a newspaper strike kept the news from being delivered. The play opened and word of mouth made it a success! Finally the newspapers came out, but it was too late to impact the play ~ which as I recall was one we all know now.
I don't know the answer, I look to the panel of experts for help.
There were a couple of plays that opened during a newspaper strike, such as Mr. President, but I don't think that is the one.
