The Story Of Curtains on Broadway

The setting is in New York City and is based around the main character Bobby who is a typical 35 year old bachelor surrounded by his best friends who are all married. Bobby also has three girlfriends who are involved in his life at this critical time. The story takes off with his birthday and his desire for a perfect girl for his important evening. The epiphany is realized at this time when he seems to understand his relationships with women have had no meaning nor an ability for commitment. Bobby is able to see that although his friends have to deal with problems they remain happy within their committed relationships. He quickly begins to see the positive and negative aspects of a non committed relationship as well as those aspects of a committed relationship.

Stephen Sondheim created the score for Curtains and has his name already in the theater scene with such shows as Gypsy and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He also can be credited for writing the lyrics for West Side Story. His award winning history is quite impressive, an Academy Award, several Tony Awards, a Grammy Award and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama with the very successful Sunday in the Park.

Curtains has a nice history on Broadway and was a ground breaking show in it’s day. Unconventional in the way it used a musical genre to accomplish a deep storyline. Still today Curtains proves to have an unconventional look at love and commitment in a changing and sometimes harsh world. The musical has not become dated at all and perhaps was ahead of it’s time in the way love and relationships have progressed from the 1970s to today.
