Deviled Pictures - The Rise of a Film Production Company

Recently Eric Shepard has opened a new motion picture production company, under the name of Deviled Pictures. The company was opened early in 2009.
So far the company has produced several short films, along with a television series.
In June of 2008, Deviled Pictures had released it’s first ever film. The eight minute documentary was released under the title of “New Reigns” (directed and produced by Eric Shepard). The film explores the world of rodeo and all of the struggles modern day cowboys face in order to perserve their western lifestyle in a constantly developing society. So far the film has grown greatly in popularity since it’s release.
Deviled Pictures later produced a television series, called “In Your Kitchen” (created and directed by Eric Shepard). The show was a thirty-minute cooking program. It’s goal was to try and take the comedy element of a sitcom and bring it to what would normally be a rather unappealing cooking program. This ambition of comedy proved to be successful. Soon after the premire of the pilot episode, the show received multiple positive reveiws, and people soon demanded more and more episodes. So far five episodes have been made, completing the first season of the show. “In Your Kitchen” airs thursday nights at six o’clock, on Consolidated network.
Coming soon from Deviled Pictures is a short film, titled “The Dictator Awards” (written and directed by Eric Shepard). Further information on the project will be announced shortly.
Deviled Pictures is expected to announce their first feature-length film sometime within the next year.

What Makes a Good Entertainer

I’m a professional magician from Finland. Finland is a rather small country, and we have only about 10 professionals who make their living performing magic.
Despite this above mentioned fact, I do around 150 gigs per year, and that is about as much as I can handle. I have been around the world in many magic conventions and seen a lot of good performers and sleight of hand artists, but the big question remains; why do some make a living performing this art, and others don’t.
Is it personality?
To some extent I would say yes, definitely. You have to be an open person and you must find it easy to communicate with people. Let’s say you do close up magic (which I strongly suggest you should also do if you want to make a good living in magic) but you find it difficult to confront people up close. This will obviously make you somewhat unnatural and the audience senses this very quickly.
It is of vital importance for a performer to be very bold, strong but at the same time sophisticated and not too aggressive. It is very important to be able to read the audience correctly and to ‘tune in’ into the audience. Â A performer is not just anybody. He is someone people are used to look up to, give him the space and enjoy the ride. But if the ride is not enjoyable and the performer is uncomfortable it will end up very quickly.
Is it my technique?
The skill of the performer is also very important. A skillful performer always gets credited, take for example a good juggler; it is enjoyable to watch he’s pure skill and the excitement of the art.
So being skillful is also important and will add up to the total entertainment value. This should also not be overused and never just show off, blend skill into the performances with taste. We are speaking of the whole package here and that is what people are going to remember.
What magic style should I choose?
Well, obviously the one that suits you best, but there can be variations and exceptions.
What I do, is mixing comedy and magic. This is very common and many do this, but you need to be very good and very funny to make it really pay off.
Let me give you an example:
I used to perform more seriously, but I also wanted to have comedy in my shows. I ended up being confusing and probably not funny at all. I thought that the tricks I do will make people wonder and it is not so important what I say. Still after many performances I felt confused and lost. I haven’t found my stage person, and I did not get the reactions I knew were possible.
Then I saw a younger friend of mine perform in a magic competition. He was so funny I could not believe it, the audience loved him and he was having a good time on stage.
This was a big lesson for me.
I started to work with my program from scratch and really going through every second of it. What I say, how do I look, what gestures etc. I had always on my mind my goal, which was to do good quality tricks but to be very funny at the same time. I rehearsed my show over and over and left out parts that did not really work and finally ended up with a 15 minutes of solid material.
I went to gig with this material and the response was amazing. People laughed, enjoyed themselves, and wanted to get my cards more than everâ¦
I knew I was on the right path.
Then I started to do the same to my close up magic. I was always a more natural close up worker than a stage performer, but I took my close up to another level also.
Finally I had a stage personality and I knew what I was doing and what I wanted to do.
What a relief and how nice it felt doing gigs and make people happy.
That is the secret how I get so many bookings.
Marketing is important, but the most important is the gigs you do, because there is always someone in the audience who is arranging a party in the near future and need a good entertainer. And the word gets around. Many times when a new customer calls me, he says he got a reference from somebody else who had seen me somewhere.
Customers want to get a good performer, because we all experienced the annoyed feeling a bad performer generates and if you do corporate magic you will never be booked again if you do a bad job.
Summing it up; be natural with people, practice your art, practice and review your show and don’t risk anything. Have a complete script for your show and follow it.
Keep improving and the gigs will come.

It also gives you the chance to show off your cookery talent, or be impressed by your dateâs cookery skills. Alternatively you could enjoy a takeaway together and share your favourite dishes. Depending on the amount of food you order, takeaway prices are relatively cheap compared to a fancy restaurant. A picnic is another great date idea. A romantic setting in the countryside to enjoy a tasty picnic allows you to relax and make the most of the piece and quiet. A picnic can be as extravagant as you wish, or keep it simple for a lower cost. If you like the idea of a picnic and staying at home, another great idea is a candle-lit picnic on the living room floor. This is good if it is raining outside, plus it enables you to put on romantic music in the background. If you prefer going to a restaurant, then a lower-cost option is to go to a restaurant at lunchtime when many restaurants have special lunchtime offers and discounted meals. Alternatively you could have a mouth-watering pub lunch, which are often cheaper than restaurant prices.
If you like to go to the cinema or theatre on a date, there are cheaper options. Many cinemas offer discounted ticket prices on particular days and times, usually when visiting the cinema is unpopular. This does vary from cinema to cinema, but it is definitely worth looking in to. Another great idea is to watch a movie in the comfort of your own home. Not only is it cheaper and cosier, it also enables you to watch whichever movie you feel like, unlike the cinema where you are restricted to a handful of films. Why not substitute a visit to the theatre with a comedy club? Laughing is a great way to bring two people closer together, so a comedy club is a perfect option, plus it is guaranteed that you will end the date with a smile on your face. If youâre not a great fan of comedy, you could always attend a book reading or poetry reading at a local bookshop. If both you and your date enjoy books and poetry, then this is an ideal option for you and it has the bonus of being free of charge.
If you are a fan of the outdoors and fresh air then there are several date ideas for you. A gentle stroll or even a hike in the countryside, the park or a wood is a good way to spend some quality time together. Without any interruptions you will have all the time you need to get to know one another without spending a penny. You then have the choice of taking some sandwiches with you and eating them in a quiet location, but donât forget to take some extra bread to feed the ducks if you are near a river or lake. Other outdoor date ideas include watching the sunset or sunrise, bird watching and stargazing, all of which can be very romantic, especially watching the stars in the fresh night air. Even if you arenât interested in birds or the stars, it can be enjoyable to learn something new with someone you care about.
There are several active date ideas that are low-cost which are great if you enjoy being energetic. You donât need to have special equipment or belong to a specialised club to take part in sport; your local park and a ball are sufficient. Being active is a great way to have fun and make you feel relaxed at the same time. Cycling is a great date idea if you enjoy the outdoors and enjoy being active. This wonât cost you anything if you already own a bike. Alternatively many nature reserves or wooded locations allow you to hire bikes and cycle around the area. Less energetic activities such as miniature golf is another low-cost way to have fun. You could even take up kite flying and perhaps even make your own kite out of newspaper and bits you have about the house. You will have lots of fun together trying to get your homemade kite lift off the ground.
Other low-cost date ideas include window shopping, playing a board game, a visit to an art gallery or museum and a trip to the beach. Depending on parking prices and location, these ideas can be cost-free. Many museums and galleries are free to visit and a day at the beach neednât cost much if you take your own food and rug to sit on.
If you are interested in learning something new with your partner, why not take up a hobby together? It will cost to learn a new hobby, such as dancing or painting, but in the long run it will be cheaper than multiple visits to a restaurant, cinema or theatre. As well as having fun together, a hobby will lead to further date ideas to carry out, for example, visiting a castle or lake to paint your view.
Many of these date ideas can be as expensive or inexpensive as you like, but donât forget about hidden costs. Remember that admission fees, parking charges and eating and drinking out costs all add up and can make a date more expensive. If you plan your date and take into account possible added costs, then you can achieve a successful romantic date on a budget suitable for you.

The Ten Steps to Happiness After 40

Step One: Engage in self-reflection
I know â easier said than done. Most of us go through our lives never really getting to know ourselves. After all, life offers us many distractions. Who has time for self-reflection? The only way to to be happy after 40 is to get to know yourself really well. This includes accepting and loving who you are. This includes accepting and loving the nervous habits that only you know about, those annoying addictions, and that little pot belly or slight jiggle. All your life perhaps, you have been reminded by a parental voice that you are not quite good enough or smart enough. Or maybe itâs a loving spouse who, with all good intentions, is quick to remind you of your faults. It may be just society â and all the pressures to look and act young while buying lots of stuff and having perfect children and lots of money. All this can make self-reflection a scary proposition, but this is the first and most important step towards happiness. Start with this simple question:
What makes me happiest?
Be completely selfish and honest with your answer
Step Two: Spend time on what makes you most happy
Sounds logical, doesnât it? Examine your list. What are some of the things that make you happiest; and make you feel most alive? Perhaps itâs the little things â like reading the paper in the morning? Or reading a good book? Maybe itâs spending time with those you care about? Maybe itâs playing on the computer writing music. The point is this: make sure each day contains at least some of these important elements. This will make you happy.
Donât give up these items to satisfy others and their demands. This will lead to illness and unhappiness.
Step Three: Find someone to take of and who can take care of you
Humans need humans. We also need a few â or even just one â person we can think about all the time: planning activities with or just daydreaming about. Ideally, this will be the same person who spends their day planning for you, dreaming about you, perhaps making your special cup of tea when you come home at night. With someone to care for in a equal relationship, you will be happy. So many relationships end up lopsided, with one person more dependent on the other. Two people who place each otherâs needs in high priority in a loving way enables happiness.
Step Four: Laugh a lot each day
Humor helps to focus the mind on the silly aspects of life. Humor helps break patterns such as negative thinking and addictive habits. Whether itâs watching funny movies, going to see comedy or just joking with people you meet, you will lighten the stress of everyday life. This will help you to be happy.
I used to become so angry about sales calls to the house at dinner time. Now, it becomes my comedy hour. The other day someone called to offer some type of insurance. The offer was that if I agreed to buy the insurance, they would send out a ten dollar gift certificate for gas in 7-10 days. I told them I was out of gas today, and asked if they could overnight the coupon, so that I could have gas the following day. Then I asked them when their dinner break was. They told me, and I said I would call them back during their dinner break as I was having my dinner! The person said they werenât allowed to take calls during dinner!! Amazing, but you get the idea!
Laugh with others, and find comedy in your daily life. This will make you happy.
Step 5: Be physical
There are lots of ways to be more physical. You can run, lift weights, swim, do yoga, walk, make loveâyou get the idea. Motion changes emotion. Stuck in a depression? Get out and move! This will make you happy.
Step 6: Take afternoon naps
A twenty-minute nap lying down will recharge your batteries. Add eight hours of sleep each night, and you will feel rested. When we are rested, our creativity soars, our spirits are lifted, and we look at the bright side of our lives.
Well-rested people are happier!
Step 7: Eat small meals throughout the day
The typical American diet is little to no breakfast, a decent lunch, and a huge dinner. Break this pattern. Start to eat smaller meals throughout the day. I recommend five meals throughout the day, small and healthy meals, of course.
What we eat has a huge influence on our attitude, and ultimately our happiness.
Fight the urge for unheathy foods. Healthy eating habits can help make you happy.
Step 8: Become emotionally strong
When we let others and their feelings and perceptions of us worry us all day, this drains our energy and spirit. When we live our lives for the approval of others, we are no better off than the puppet on the string at the local childrenâs puppet show. Become internally motivated, and you will become emotionally stronger. Use quiet time to think deeply about one subject at a time until you reach a conclusion and resolution. In the end, tell yourself you did the best you could at the time. This will make you emotionally strong, and you will be happier.
Step 9: Treat your money with respect
Your money has no loyality to any person or cause. It goes where you decide to place it.
Even though there is really great software these days to track your money, start with a pencil and a piece of paper. Examine what comes in each month, and what goes out. Thatâs it.
Make sure you are spending money on things that are important to you and that add value in your life. Certain bills may add value in your life, such as the electric bill, but the multiple credit card bills do not add value, especially if, like most of us, you still have the bills coming long after you have forgotten what you bought. Pay these off. There is no secret here. You either have to reduce expenses or increase income. Both can make you happy. In my experience, reducing the expense side will make you happier!
Step 10: Do the work you love
Of course I saved the best for last. When we spend our days doing work that aligns our interests and our abilities â and feels just right â we are happier. Start by examining your work: this can help you progress through the other nine steps. Most of us figure out what work might make us happy, but then we quickly convince ourselves that our dreams are not possible.
Think about it, if you donât believe that your dreams are possible, who else will?
START!
Each day, focus on one of these steps and within a few weeks you will learn how to use all ten steps together. Like a well-tuned orchestra, you will start to play the music that makes you happiest.
After 40, isnât it about time for you?
