In literature what is the difference between trajedy and comedy?

In literature and plays what is the difference between a comedy and a trajedy?

In a comedy, no one dies. It does not necessarily have to be funny.
In a tragedy, someone dies.

Basketball Hoop Dreams Hoopla

Posted by admin

Basketball bears a distant resemblance to it’s early days, when the basketball net wasn’t a net at all but a peach basket. Apparently James Naismith the inventor of basketball, had a keen intuition for sports, but not quite so keen on physics. The obvious problem with the impromptu basketball net, was that there was no hole in the bottom for the basket ball to fall through. I sure we’ve all seen the commercial where one of the players has to climb up the ladder to retrieve the basketball after each score. The brilliant solution by Mr Naismith, was of course to cut a hole in the bottom of the basket. Seems like an obvious solution to those of us versed in the modern game of basketball, but wait the punch line is yet to come. The hole they cut, wasn’t big enough for the basketball to fall through. It was however, big enough for a person standing on the floor to poke a broom handle through and push the basketball ball back up through the top. Funny how the obvious is not always so obvious to those at the time. In spite of it’s somewhat comical beginnings, basketball has truly evolved to one of the premier sporting events in the world. I bet James would be thrilled to see his little game today. I hope.

Dusting Jack

Basketball had quite a few funny quirks along the road to success. One of the early interesting rules would have pretty hilarious consequences today. In today’s game of basketball, when a ball goes out of bounds, the last player to touch the basketball ball, is ruled to have been responsible for putting the ball out of play, and therefor his/her team loses possession of the ball. Things were a little different with the original basket rules. In the original game of basketball, the first player to retrieve a ball that had gone out of bounds, earned possession of the ball for his team. I suppose that makes sense when your first playing the game in a gymnasium, with one gym teacher, who doesn’t want to have to retrieve every out of bounds ball. Why don’t just let the players retrieve the basket balls. Ha! Could you imagine the melee that would occur in today’s professional games, if that was the rule. I can just see Kobe Bryant climbing over Jack Nicholson, spilling his drink, knocking his glasses all cock-eyed in a furiously desperate attempt to grab the loose ball before his opponent. Comical . . . yes. Hilarious . . . yes. Entertaining . . . yes. Likely to be adopted by the NBA . . . not frigging likely. We can always dream though.

Entertainment As Sport

Basketball certainly has to be one of the more successful forms of sports entertainment today. From all the pre-game theatrical dramatics (Ala the Micheal Jordan era Chicago Bulls) to the bad boys that seem to be prevalent in any sport, but especially basketball. In spite of the fact that most basketball games are decided in the last few minutes of play, it is truly an exciting game to watch and play. Especially if you get the opportunity to view a basketball game live. Highly recommended. Those guys make the television guys look like their moving in slow motion.

Do you agree that the best dramma is a comedy ?

Posted by admin

Sometimes , the comedy includes deep messages which make u think about , or sometimes the comedy (And i;m refering at theatre or movie, too ) has an tragycal final ,which might be taken as an advertence . I'm an amateur -actress and that's what I've understand for almost all the comedies i've played until now.

Every actor will tell you that comedy is harder to do than tragedy, but I don't think the best drama is a comedy. Some comedies have no meaning at all ans exist only to make people laugh. There are some that have a meaning, but if there is a death or something like that, now we're talking, literally, of a tragi-comedy. Some of Shakespeare's comedies are not side-splitting funny; they just don't have a body count at the end of the play.

Thesaurus: Word Roulette

Posted by admin

There is some beautiful literary styles that thrive on the repeated use of words and phrases. The language is poetic and beautiful. This, however, is not an article that encourages the use of repeated words.

Unless you are writing in a style that demands the use of repetition it may be in your best interest to read through your text and determine if a word or phrase is overused.

Example:

Bad

The purpose of this exercise is to find the purpose of the repeated use of a word and then purpose not to use that word so much.

Good

The purpose of this exercise is to discover the objective of the repeated use of a word. After which you resolve not to use that word continually.

Both sentences said the exact same thing, but one was infused with different, but related words that allowed a more readable flow.

Many writers work on a first draft by simply attempting to lay down the ideas in a coherent fashion. It is only after they toil through their first draft that they begin to notice a repetition of phrases or words.

Many writers utilize a tool that provides a benefit in saying something a more unique fashion - that device is a thesaurus.

A thesaurus can be used to take a sentence like the following and transform it into something new.

Original

Taking part in the school play was hard for Tammy because she was so shy and awkward.

Enhanced

Participating in the theatrical production at school was challenging for Tammy since she was so reserved and self-conscious.

Many word processors provide a tool function that allows you to highlight a word and it will provide a list of word choices that you can use to replace an overused or ill-fitting word.

If you have a greater interest in writing longhand you should consider the purchase of a thesaurus that may assist you in your writing. You might be surprised at how a thesaurus can help open up new avenues of creativity and expression in your writing.

Sometimes a word will have more than one meaning and a good thesaurus can help provide words in context of the original meaning giving you flexibility in the application of any given word.

So the next time you stumble across a word that has seen lots of appearances in your writing, break out a thesaurus and expand the possibilities.

Ten Reasons to Watch Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip

Posted by admin

1.The Premise
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is about the behind-the-scenes machinations of a long-running sketch comedy show in the vein of “Saturday Night Live”. As we know from the second episode, Studio 60 also exists in the same universe as Saturday Night Live; they mention it by name a number of times. The difference between the two shows are important. Studio 60 takes place in Los Angeles and is aired on Friday nights. The premise is perfect for an hour-long drama because there is the built-in tension and suspense of putting together a live show with a deadline. And, who isn’t interested about what goes on behind-the-curtain of a show with lots of talent and big egos?

2.The Creator
Aaron Sorkin created Studio 60 and it’s largely biographical. His cypher is Matt Albie (played by Matthew Perry), the new Head Writer for Studio 60. Sorkin created NBC’s monster hit “The West Wing” and ABC’s short-lived, yet brilliant “Sports Night”. Widely considered to be one of the best writers in Hollywood, Sorkin is known for his extremely clever dialogue and dynamic characters. Also, as a writer, he is prolific in a way that only him and David E. Kelley know. Sorkin will write almost every single episode of the show he is running. Even if he doesn’t write a story for a particular episode, he will always at least write all the dialogue. This will give Studio 60 a consistency and focus most shows can only dream of.

3.Matthew Perry & Bradley Whitford
Matthew Perry has been largely anonymous since “Friends” ended, and that is a shame. Perry is, and always has been, an underrated and talented comedian who has deserved far better material than he has received outside of “Friends”. With the character of Matt Albie, he has been given a once-in-a-lifetime character that Perry is perfect for. It will be a huge upset if he isn’t nominated for a Best Actor Emmy, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he wins it.
Bradley Whitford plays Danny Tripp, Matt Albie’s partner and co-show runner on Studio 60. Whitford is well-acquainted with Sorkin, having played Josh Lyman (a great character in itself) on “The West Wing” for it’s entire run. The Danny character is a meaty one for Whitford; Danny is a recovering cocaine addict who is only working on Studio 60 because he tested positive for cocaine weeks before he was supposed to direct a movie (scripted by Matt Albie). Whitford is an excellent actor, and the chemistry between him and Perry is already superb.

4.Amanda Peet & Stephen Weber
Amanda Peet has been under-utilized for most of her career, which is a damn shame. The talented and beautiful actress got her start in “The Whole Nine Yards” (with Matthew Perry) and has since languished on the fringes of Hollywood’s A-List. Again, Sorkin has created an incredible character for Peet to portray as the newly appointed NBS (Studio 60’s fictional network) President Jordan McDeere. She is brash and ballsy, unafraid to take on the higher-ups for something she believes in. She has made it her goal to bring Studio 60 back to it’s previous heights, and will stop at nothing to do so.
Facing off with Peet is Jack Rudolph, the NBS Chairman played by “Wings” Stephen Weber. Weber has been around for awhile, and is also a victim of receiving material not up to the level of his talent. His character is a worthy antagonist to Peet’s idealistic network President, ruling with an iron fist and breaking down the realities of a company whose only goal is to make a profit.

5.D.L. Hughley & Nathan Corddry
Hughley and Corddry play two members of “The Big Three”, the most important and talented cast members on the show-within-the-show on Studio 60. D.L. Hughley has been around the comedy game for some time and is extremely famous in some circles, especially for his part in “The Original Kings of Comedy”. However, he has never found the spotlight like so many of his contemporary black comedians. He’s been on prime time and had a couple of his own shows, but massive success has alluded him. What is interesting is that D.L. certainly had the talent to be on a Saturday Night Live type show, but is now likely to find the most important role of his career as an actor playing a member of a fictional comedy troupe.
Playing off Hughley will be the young Nathan Corddry, brother of “The Daily Show’s” Rob Corddry, and, really, an unknown entity. Of all the cast members on Studio 60, Corddry is the biggest wild card. He hasn’t had a lot to do in the first couple episodes, but I’m eager to see how funny he can be on the sketches within the show and if he has enough range to pull off the drama outside of it.

6.Guest Stars
One of the beauties of Studio 60’s premise is the built-in forum for guest stars. Each episode of the fictitious Studio 60, like SNL, has a host. This sets up myriad possibilities for celebrities to play themselves on the show, which allows for any number of interesting and fun story lines. In the pilot, Sorkin stalwart Felicity Huffman was the host; Lauren Graham (from Gilmore Girls) will be appearing in a couple of upcoming episodes. Sorkin is a master at seamlessly integrating familiar faces into his shows (a la “The West Wing”) and is just another unique quality that sets Studio 60 above the pack.

7.It’s Funny
Sorkin is known for his drama, but his dialogue is rife with smart, natural humor that is sparked, not by unbelievable situations, but by character and conflict. The difference between the humor on Studio 60 and that on sitcoms is that Studio 60 isn’t filled with “jokes”. It’s organic and moves the story along and never seems out of place. You will laugh while watching Studio 60. That’s a guarantee.

8.It’s Dramatic
A vast number of characters, even within the first two episodes, have already been pitted against each other in various, interesting ways. Sorkin, again, weaves the conflict through his huge cast with seemingly little effort and has set up a ridiculous amount of story options for the rest of the season. The key, of course, is the characters. Most writers are tentative to pile on conflict with there characters; they like them too much. Sorkin loves to torture his and the emotional product of this is exquisite. Tension and suspense comes out of nowhere to grab hold of the viewer, making Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as riveting a show as you’ll find on TV.

9.It Will Make Fun of TV
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is the perfect forum to satirize any and all aspects of the television industry. And don’t think Sorkin will be afraid to capitalize on this. From the very first scene of the pilot, when then-show runner Wes Mendell interrupts a live broadcast to lambast his own network and TV as a whole, we know that Studio 60 will be pulling no punches. Stay tuned, controversy may be up ahead.

10.It’s (Maybe) the Best Show on Television
Perhaps this is a little bold, but I can’t remember the last time I’ve been so in love with a show immediately out of the gates. Typically, great television shows take some time to develop and hit their peak. If Studio 60 gets any better, we’re in for something special. Even if it doesn’t, it’s special enough as is.

Florence, Italy…a Must See for the First-time Visitor to Italy

Posted by admin

If I were to pick one city as a definite must-see for the first time traveler to Italy, my choice would be Florence. Since the birth of the Renaissance, Florence has retained its standing as a center of art and culture. It has also become renowned for high fashion (excellent leather and silk goods), great cuisine, beautiful parks, tourism and, of course, friendly and warm people. Located in the heart of the central region of Tuscany, Florence is situated in a valley surrounded by rolling Tuscan hills. It is about a three-hour train ride north of Rome and 1 hour from Pisa.

Home to many great prominent figures (Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarotti, Dante Allighieri, Niccolo’ Machiavelli), their legacies can be seen all over town. In the Academy Art Gallery one can see Michaelangelo’s famous Statue of David, completed by the sculptor at age 26 after others had rejected the marble block because of its imperfections. According to the bible, David represents an Israelite shepherd boy who emerged victorious in an improbable battle against the mighty Goliath. In the Uffizzi Galleries, Europe’s third largest museum, one can see Sandro Botticelli’s masterpiece “Birth of Venus”.

The city has an excellent bus system, and it is also very easy to get around on foot. A great place for a stroll is along the Ponte Vecchio, or the “Old Bridge.” This is the oldest of all the bridges in Florence and may even date back to Etruscan times. It has undergone many repairs through the centuries. It has even been the source of controversy. During one of the World Wars, a German general defied orders to bomb the bridge because he thought it was so beautiful. Previously, the bridge was aligned with butcher shops. Today, however, the only merchants allowed on the bridge are jewelers. It is one of the social points in town where you can window shop and watch artists as they sketch.

Another great place to shop is along Via Tornabuoni. Here you can find various boutiques and fashion giants as Armani, Versace, Fendi and Gucci. Florence also has many open markets where you can find some excellent leather and silk bargains. Some of the better markets include the market of San Lorenzo and the market in the Parco delle Cascine.

Florence is also noted for its excellent cuisine and sinfully delicious desserts and gelati (ice cream). Many fine restaurants can be found in town. You must not leave the city without trying some risotto, a Florentine specialty. Another specialty, believe it or not, is beefsteak. You can, of course, find excellent pasta dishes as you would in other parts of Italy. Because Tuscany is in the heart of the Chianti region, there is always an excellent selection of wines to savor.

Just South of the Arno River lies the Boboli Gardens, once an estate of a feudal king; it is one of the most beautiful parks in all of Europe. It is over 100 acres of beautifully manicured landscape and walking paths aligned with trees. There is even a Roman amphitheater, which in the summer is used for theatrical plays. Walking up to the top of the hill offers a great panoramic view of the city.

In summary, Florence has everything you are looking for in an Italian vacation: great food, great art and great people. It doesn’t take long for the city’s charm to capture your heart and spirit. With half a million inhabitants, it does not overwhelm you like a city such as Rome or Milan (each of which has approximately 4 million people).

I believe Charles Dickens said it best in the “Pictures of Italy” when he wrote “how much beauty is here, when, on a fair clear morning, we look, from the summit of a hill, on Florence! See where it lies before us in a sun-lighted valley, bright with the winding Arno, and shut in by swelling hills; its domes, and towers, and palaces, rising from the rich country in a glittering heap, and shining in the sun like gold!”
