Posted by admin

I can hit a G and im wondering what some good upbeat musical songs i should sing at my senior recital! If you have any ideas (the more the better) that would be great! Comedy is preferred but anything is good.

Thanks

Woody Allen’s “Match Point” (2005)

Posted by admin

The very first line I ever heard Woody Allen speak was a joke on the Tonight show concerning theological issues, about how, during a divinity test, he cheated by “looking into the soul of the girl sitting next to me.” I believe that he used a clip from such a stand up routine in one of his films, perhaps Annie Hall. I honestly don’t remember. For decades, Woody has intertwined several basic themes: love and its yearnings. Faith. Talent and success. Human evil and the absence of God in the universe. And he does that thing that humor does: takes pain and fear, turns them inside out and makes us laugh. But behind the laughter has always been an extraordinarily keen mind and a troubled spirit.

Most of us agree that his marriage to his own step-daughter was a sign of a damaged psyche. Of course, he’d been warning us for decades that he was damaged goods, hadn’t he? It wasn’t until “Bullets Over Broadway” in which a murderous hit-man is revealed as a theatrical genius, did it finally hit me that he was obsessed with the question of why evil is not punished in the universe. Why, in fact, success seems to have no connection to the purity of the soul.

In “Crimes and Misdemeaners” he went further, encouraging us to empathize with a man capable of a terrible act…but that film sat on the fence, allowing us to argue about the right and wrong of things, rather than focusing us on the core question which has obviously chewed at his heart and mind since childhood.

No such mistake in “Match Point.” In this film, which I consider one of his very best ever, he tells the story of a social-climbing tennis pro (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who marries the boss’s daughter (Chloe Hewett Wilton) while harboring a passion for his future sister-in-law (Scarlett Johanssen). The bedroom farce takes a rather dark turn (to say the least), leading to an action which very few people could find other than utterly reprehensible on every conceivable level. And to a diabolically clever ending. The theme, announced from the very beginning is that few of us want to face the fact that so much of life is based on luck. Specifically, luck as opposed to merit.

But to skip over all further plot details to address this theme, I think it’s something of an Easter Egg. Look deeper, and the question is not merely one of luck, but one that asks: “Is there a God in the Universe? If so, what is His nature, and why is he silent?”

I can’t help but think that Woody is asking the wrong question. If, as I suspect, on one level he believes human beings are shallow and evil, and that he himself has achieved massive wealth and fame while deeply flawed and (he suspects) evil in his personal life, then where is the justice in the universe.

First of all, with this film, I found myself believing that Allen is a good man. Flawed, but good. The nature of the questions he has been asking his entire life, as opposed to what we know of his personal life, leads me to think him damaged but not damned. Just a personal opinion.

Secondly, I think that the key is not in “why are the wicked not punished” but the question “what is the nature of a good, successful life”? He has taken a perfectly reasonable approach: a beautiful spouse, wealth, health, public acclaim are a good life. That evil men and women can achieve this must be deeply troubling to him.

And troubles me not at all. It is possible of course that it is MY philosophy that is shallow, and his that cuts deep. I won’t be self-congratulatory, or dogmatic enough to pat myself on the back, but I must stake out a position.

So here it is. I think that external measurements of success are wonderful, but ultimately satisfying only if they match our internal values. And from the cradle, we crave connection to love, to warmth, to that total acceptance we felt from our mothers, in the womb if nowhere else. And that this craving is totally unconscious, and that we spend the rest of our lives attempting to regain it.

When we sense that our own values and actions could be replicated by the entire world, to its benefit, I think that there is a sense of peace that simply cannot be put into words, a state of grace, of joy that those who have not experienced simply cannot believe in—as sociopaths cannot believe that human beings genuinely experience love and caring for one another. Such poor souls circle in the outer darkness. Say “I love you” to them, and they think “if only you knew what I really was, you wouldn’t say that.” Or worse, they think “poor, deluded fool, to feel such trivial, false emotions.”

Of COURSE it is possible to achieve acclaim, and fame, and health, and hot sex and be evil. Evil is a judgment about things on a spiritual level, not on the level of business (although in general, honesty pays in business) or marriage contracts (you can lie and cheat, and your mate may never discover it) or fitness/health (I’ve known tremendously fit and long-lived people who were monsters).

Yet and still, Lifewriting asks us to embrace these three qualities as markers of inner worth. Why? Because they are the best, simplest external markers I know of. They are not infallible.

On a personal level, I believe that when our inner values and our outer actions are in alignment, and when those actions and values are transparent, so that we would stand before all mankind and say: “this is who I am. And I would want my children, and your children to be the same, and I am prepared to stand before the universe and say that I would be willing and happy to be treated as I have treated others” that there is a simple peace that comes from this that cannot be replaced by money, or sex, or even life itself.

Those who have been abused, neglected, uncherished, often do not develop the spiritual sensory equipment to find their way to this place. The armies of lethal children found in inner cities around the third world (and sometimes the first world) attest to this: they have not experienced love, and therefore have no ability to empathize, or care about much beyond survival and simple pleasures.

What IS a good life? In my mind, the correct answer to this needs no God in the universe to punish the wicked, although a life lived in this fashion often opens an awareness (or to be fair, a belief) in the existence of the divine. To be separated from this sense is to be lost in an intellectual fog, trying to reason out the nature of things far larger than our minds. The intellect cannot go there, is the wrong tool. For decades Allen has tried to reason out his relationship with God, to understand the Holocaust in the framework of his childhood beliefs. I feel terribly sorry for him, and hope that he can forgive the world, and himself, in time to find peace in his life.

But meanwhile, I’m going to enjoy his ruminations. They are brilliant, and heartfelt, and heartbreakingly honest at this point in his life. “Match Point” is another of the best films of 2005, one which, unfortunately, I didn’t see until 2006.

In retrospect, 2005 was one heck of a year for movies. I hope 2006 will be as fine.

Tips On Celebrating Your Dating Anniversaries Thoughtfully

Posted by admin

Celebrating dating anniversaries is not about a lavish party or any kind of expensive event. It’s primarily about letting your partner know that you remembered the date, which means that the relationship is special to you. Of course, not every anniversary is as special or has equal weight as others. Let’s take a look at the special dating anniversaries that you should be celebrating.

The first is the three month dating anniversary. If you’ve been together for three months the bloom is not off the rose of romance, but celebrating the event tells your mate that you want to continue the relationship even though you’ve now started to see some of her or his faults and foibles. A nice meal in a special place is a great way to celebrate this dating anniversary. You might want to go to a comedy club or dinner theatre, or to some place romantic like a ballet or opera.

And, oh, by the way, don’t celebrate the first or second month of your dating. That’s the time when you’re still getting to know each other, you don’t know that you want to go farther; you don’t know that your partner does. Besides, most relationships last for one or two months. You could be spending time and money celebrating something that will end next week. You could have an empty wallet and a lonely heart.

Celebrating a one year dating anniversary is much more serious, and much more special. Now you really know a lot more about each other, good and bad. Yet you’re still together. You’re bound to be thinking long term as is he or she, and you need to make this incredibly special. Travel out of town - maybe a trip to San Francisco if you live in Sonoma County, or a day at the Indy 500 if you’re from Fort Wayne. It doesn’t have to be a week in Hawaii, but make it a very special treat, full of good wine, good food and loving attention showered on each others.

Celebrating a two year dating anniversary should be a trip alone together. You might do something you’ve always wanted to do - something that the two of you will remember forever. Perhaps begin a sport or tradition that will carry you into forever. You might start wilderness camping, or whitewater rafting, or mountain climbing. You might find a cabin at the lake that you return to each and every year after that. Once night has fallen on your first day’s adventure is the time to pull out the gorgeous diamond or the great new watch, or the book of love poems - something that will have her or him remembering you each time she or he looks at it.

Once you’ve hit the five year dating anniversary one of you is probably getting anxious about when the question is going to get popped. That anniversary must deal with that. While you must shower each other with love and attention you must recommit as well, whether there’s a diamond in the future or the present or not. Without this you might not be celebrating any more dating anniversaries.

Special Effect Contacts - Be the Center of Attention at Costume Parties

Posted by admin

Theatrical contact lenses are favorites for costume
parties. And for a good reason - nothing can make your costume
seem more real than a pare of bright inhuman eyes. However, with
so many special effect contacts available it is important to
know how to select good ones.

All special effect contacts are soft contact lenses. This means
that, with proper care and cleaning, you will hardly notice
there is anything in your eyes. Most people can wear costume
contact lenses without any problems.

What types of special effect contact lenses are on offer?

Theatrical lenses come in hundreds of exciting designs. You can
get cat’s eye contacts, red or black spirals, wolf eyes,
bloodshot eyes, vampire, white-out, black-out or even an
American flag design. The most popular and trustworthy brands of
special effect contact lenses are Crazy Lenses from Cooper
Vision and Wild Eyes from Ciba Vision.

See photos of people wearing costume special effect contact lenses

As all color contact lenses, costume lenses can be produced
digitally (printed by a computer) or hand-painted. As you would
expect, the price of hand-painted contacts is much higher than
mass produced, digital ones - usually upwards from $150.
Hand-painted lenses are the most beautiful, and every detail is
very clear.

However, don’t assume that mass produced lenses are no good.
They make an excellent addition to your costume for a Halloween
party, or just for a fun night out at a club. On the other hand,
if you plan to shoot a home movie, where your face will be seen
large and clear, a pair of more expensive, hand-painted
theatrical lenses would be better.

You can also order custom special effect lenses - an artist will
paint any design you like. Naturally, though, custom theatrical
lenses are the most expensive.

What effect would you like - just to change the color portion of
your eye to something exotic, or to cover the whites of your
eyes as well and make them look completely inhuman?

Most theatrical contact lenses only cover your iris, this way
you can get an effect of cat eyes, wolf eyes, red-hot eyes or
spirals. But there’s another type of costume contact called
scleral lenses. As the name suggests, this lens covers your
entire sclera (the visible portion of your eye, including the
white). Scleral lenses are more flexible in design, because they
are not restricted by the circular shape of the lens and whites
around. The effects that you have seen in Predator or Dune are
achieved with scleral lenses.

However, scleral costume lenses are harder to manufacture, so
they are always more expensive than the circular ones - but the
effect is well worth it.

Can I wear costume contacts if I need vision correction?

The most popular brands, like Wild Eyes and Crazy lenses, come
with or without visual correction. Crazy lenses also come in the
most common size - diameter 14.2 and base curve 8.6. This means
that they would suit the majority of people.

Most other costume contacts can be only be ordered in plano.
However some companies, allow you to specify your prescription,
especially when the lenses are custom made.

Make your costume really stand out with a pair of scary
theatrical lenses. You will have great fun and be the center of
everybody’s attention

Lights, Camera, Action! a Guide to Film Locales in Orlando

Posted by admin

Although Central Florida has never quite lived up to its reputation as “Hollywood East,” many classic – and some extremely medicore – movies have been shot in the Orlando area over the years. The brief list below highlights some of the more notable films that were partly or wholly shot in Central Florida, as well as one cult movie that boasts a significant connection to the Orlando area:

Parenthood [1989] – Directed by Ron Howard, Parenthood starred Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Jason Robards, Tom Hulce, Joaquin Phoenix, Dianne Wiest and Keanu Reeves. Although this comedy/drama dealt with the trials and tribulations of a “Midwestern” family, many scenes were shot in Central Florida, including Orlando, College Park and Altamonte Springs. The birthday scene was shot at the now-defunct Mystery Fun House across from Universal Orlando.

Lethal Weapon 3 [1992] – The building that gets blown up in the opening sequence of the film is actually the old Orlando City Hall building, which had been scheduled for demolition anyway. The rest of Lethal Weapon 3 was filmed elsewhere.

Trekkies [1997] – This hilarious documentary on obsessive Star Trek fans profiled a Central Florida dentist, Dr. Denis Bourguignon, who had opened a “Starbase Dental” office full of Star Trek memorabilia and whose staff wore Star Trek uniforms.

The Blair Witch Project [1998] – Although this incredibly successful independent movie was filmed entirely in Maryland, its director and cast all graduated from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Made for about $35,000, The Blair Witch Project eventually grossed nearly $250 million worldwide.

The Waterboy [1998] – The “Bourbon Bowl” game at the end of the movie was filmed at the Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando. Many of the extras in the scene were UCF students. The Waterboy starred Adam Sandler as “Robert ‘Bobby’ Boucher Jr.,” as well as Kathy Bates and Henry Winkler.

Monster [2003] – Charlize Theron captured an Oscar as “Best Actress” for her portrayal of prostitute and serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who was executed for a notorious killing spree during the 1980s. Monster, which also starred Christina Ricci and Bruce Dern, was shot entirely in Central Florida.

Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector [2006] – Larry the Cable Guy (real name: Dan Whitney) resides in Sanford, Florida, and his film debut was shot entirely on location in Orlando. Judging by the myriad of negative reviews, critics seemed decidedly underwhelmed by Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector and a sequel appears unlikely.

In addition, before Disney closed its Central Florida animation studio at Disney-MGM Studios in 2003, a number of animated films were worked on there such as Mulan (1998), Lilo & Stitch (2002) and Brother Bear (2003), among others. The space is now occupied by an attraction called The Magic of Disney Animation, a behind-the-scenes look at the animation process.

“Disney-MGM Studios still maintains a backlot tram tour that takes you past movie sets and props, as well as Catastrophe Canyon, a showcase for state-of-the-art special effects,” said Kyle Collins, Director of Interactive Marketing for HotelsCorp.com. “In addition, both Disney-MGM Studios and Universal Studios feature a variety of rides and attractions based on popular movies such as Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, Beauty & the Beast, Star Tours, The Great Movie Ride, Revenge of the Mummy, Men in Black Alien Attack, Back to the Future the Ride and Twister . . . Ride it Out, among others.”

Central Florida is also home to the Florida Film Festival, a 10-day event in early April that features American independent films, foreign films, documentaries, regional and family films, animation, narrative films and midnight movies. Past attendees have included Dennis Hopper, Steve Buscemi, William H. Macy and Oliver Stone. The Florida Film Festival takes place at the Enzian Theater in Maitland.
